Concept of how continuous transport of the forearc shelf carries it down into the mantle producing the forearc basin. Although seismic reflection shows fine structure of the basin up to 3 km subbottom, details of the north trench wall are not well known. The model of continuous transport suggests they are sedimentary rocks deposited in situ, not rocks accreted to the wall by a tectonic process.
